Murder at the Arlington Reviews

“This is a twisty, fast-paced ride with a lot of laughs along the way. I can’t wait for the next adventure starring Sydney Lockhart. Kathleen Kaska has created one of the most memorable characters in years.”
Ben Rehder, Edgar Award Finalist.

Loved this book! Giggled, laughed, and really had a good time right to the end. Can't say that about a lot of books these days! Because it's set in the 50's I'd read along and think, "use your cell, girlfriend"...Cell? maybe jail cell! And, stockings and garter belts...eeek!

Posted March 11, 2009, 12:53 AM EST: I loved this book from the very start. It was both funny and scary. I caught myself laughing and then holding my breath in fear because the characters were real to me. It was well written and played out like a movie in my head. My biggest disappointment was the book ending. The good news is that I hear it is a series and more of the mysteries of Sydney herself will be revealed. Bring it on! I would not lend this book for fear i would not get it back. I actually got attached. I would not hesitate to buy copies to give out for sure. This book was a great escape and equal in my memory to a whole week in Hawaii. In other words, I want to go back and revisit the whole experience.

Murder at the Luther  Reviews

“Confident and free-spirited redhead, Sydney Jean Lockhart, has shunned the entrapments of marriage and domesticity in order to maintain her independence and pursue her career as a reporter.
Attending the “Neptune Rising” themed Ball on New Year’s Eve, she finds herself evading the unwanted attentions of undesirable suitors, befriended by various socialites, and looking forward to a bird watching date with used car salesman, Sam Buckner.
In the midst of party revelers, champagne and dancing, a murder occurs and Sydney Lockhart is discovered standing over the victim with his blood on her hands.
Pursued by Police Chief, Lynol Fogmore, a cigar-chewing bulldog of a man, hungry for a fast arrest and conviction, Sydney finds herself his number one suspect. In a race against time to prove her innocence, she sets out to solve the case and unmask the real murderer.
Kathleen Kaska’s book is a neatly written, fast-paced and entertaining thriller. Her central character, Sydney Lockhart, is a feisty, strong and believable heroine, embroiled in a charmingly nostalgic murder-mystery, reminiscent of the classic Agatha Christie style whodunits that would also transfer successfully to stage and screen.”
By John O. Raab, Editor of Suspense Magazine

“Smart, sassy, and sexy have a new poster girl: Sydney Lockhart. Whether she’s running from thugs through the Texas marshes or tossing back cocktails with a crazy cousin, Murder at the Luther will entertain. It’s a solid mystery wrapped in lots of humor and excitement.”—Suzanne Arruda, author of the award-winning Jade del Cameron mystery series

This review is from: What's Your Agatha Christie I.Q?: 1,001 Puzzling Questions About the World's Most Beloved Mystery Writer (Paperback)
This is the first of Kathleen Kaska's helpful trilogy for mystery fans - the other two concern Alfred Hitchcock and Sherlock Holmes. My Agatha Christie I.Q. should be fairly good, for I've read some 20 of her books, and given two cruise lectures on Agatha Christie's Middle East. But I found, amongst her 60 quizzes, said to comprise 1001 puzzle questions, lots that I didn't know or had forgotten. It's not as intimidating as it sounds, for with the help of the bibliography, which lists the entire Christie canon, the reader will be able to puzzle out many of the answers that are less familiar. This is the sort of exercise that might in less skilled hands have become wearisome - but instead, this book is fun, and a valued addition to the Agatha Christie shelf in your mystery library. Here are all sorts of quizzes to suit your mood, from the names of her books (and the ones she didn't use), to motives, murders, and victims. There are films highlighted here, as well as her wonderful plays, and even crossword puzzles! A fine, enjoyable effort from the reliable Kathleen Kaska!

"...something new for Holmes buffs to test their knowledge or prodigals looking for an excuse to reread childhood classics."Dallas Morning News

"The Sherlock Holmes Triviography and Quiz Book is a darn clever book. Anything you want to know about the master sleuth is here, divvied up by category and cross referenced."Whittier, California News

"Kathleen Kaska has put together a wonderful mind teaser for all Sherlock Holmes aficionados. She covers it all—stories, books, the media—with lots of questions, puzzles, and trivia facts. No true Sherlockian will want to miss this grand Triviography and Quiz Book."—Michael R. Pitts, author of Famous Detectives I, II, and III, and co-author of The Great Detective Pictures

The Sherlock Holmes Triviography and Quiz Book

Type of material: Softcover Book
Author: Kathleen Kaska
Publisher: Taylor Trade Publishing
Year: 2000
ISBN: 0-87833-196-4
Review: This book is fun! Each chapter includes a brief introduction, several quizzes of ten questions each (some are multiple choice; some true/false and some simply direct questions), and then a bit of trivia about every four or five quizzes. The last section contains some crossword puzzles. There are also several appendices with useful information.
The topics are laid out in a sensible order. Chapter one is a general overview of the world of Sherlock Holmes. The next covers the four novels and then the following chapters are dedicated to each of the short story collections. Having covered the Canon, there are quizzes about Holmes on tv, stage, radio and the big screen. What’s left, you ask? Why, quizzes about Sir Arthur himself!
As you would expect, some questions are much harder than others. But author Kathleen Kaska clearly did not intend to try and stump the reader with every quiz. She succeeds at this. The average Holmes fan will know some of the answers, but is unlikely to miss ten in a row. The trivia interspersed throughout adds to the sense of learning and leaves the reader with the feeling of having picked up a little something.
You can find some Holmes quizzes on the internet with a little searching, but this book is definitely worth purchasing. You will find yourself periodically pulling it off the shelf to test your Holmes knowledge.
